Old Dirty Discussion

The comment section over at the ODE website have been hosting some discussion on the recent string of commentaries on race relations. Since some people seem afraid to engage in debate here on our site, some of us have been mixing it up over there. Check out the discussions on recent pieces by Diego Hernandez, Ty Schwoeffermann,  and our own Andrea Blaser.

On a related note, I really wish the ODE would stop moderating comments. What are you afraid of? You guys refused to post one of my comments a while back… was it because I linked to this site? Here we are linking to you, now get over yourselves and stop censoring.

  1. Sean says:

Yeah, about his signature, I definitely called him out on that.

It seems we’ve scared him off of the comments page, though. I might decide to stop beating the dead horse.

  2. Betz says:

Did it piss anyone else off when Diego’s signature is
    “peace love and respect”
when he certainly doesn’t seem to practive what he preaches?

And secondly…I don’t care if he was able to get an A+ on his anthropology vocab flash cards quiz; if you can’t think critically on how they apply, then they’re little more than rhetorical ammunition to throw at someone, to show how “educated” that person is.

  3. T says:

    That was me, I believe.

  4. Sean says:

I recall someone equating Gulley’s accusations of racism to LBJ during his campaign. “I don’t care whether he is a pig fucker, just that he denies it.”

  5. Laura says:

At the ODE we screen comments to prevent people from posting spam. Some times it takes us a little while to post things, though, so it probably just got posted later than it shold have.

  6. Niedermeyer says:

The whole “I’m so oppressed that I can’t be bothered to explain how” thing is getting mighty old. Especially considering how much media space has been provided for explanation. Hell, Gulley had what, an hour to explain himself, and he never stated on the record what the “racist attacks” were… and he’s white, right?

The new social contract is unfolding: if you agree to explain everything as permutations of oppression, and baselessly accuse senators of “racist attacks” for not increasing the PFC benchmark enough, nobody questions your indulgences in “cholo” costume, and you apparently get an “Ebony Man” award from Black Women of Achievement to boot. Yeesh.

  7. Blaser says:

Well, it also indicates that you are not going to listen to anyone until they start saying the same things that you do.

Kinda sucks the air out of the whole communication thing …

  8. T says:

I am always concerned when anyone uses “you need to get educated” as an argument (look at the comments to see what I mean), as it’s the same technique used by white supremacists.
