A Real American Hero

Did the Washington Post switch stories with the Onion today, or something?

President Bush said yesterday that he gave up golfing in 2003 “in solidarity” with the families of soldiers who were dying in Iraq, concluding that it was “just not worth it anymore” to play the sport in a time of war.

“I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf,” Bush said in a White House interview with the Politico. “I feel I owe it to the families to be as — to be in solidarity as best as I can with them.”

Some people give their lives for their country. Some people wave goodbye to their children, who’re deploying overseas, not knowing if they’ll ever see them again. President Bush gave up golf.

America appreciates his sacrifice.

  1. Niedermeyer says:

My last round made the Iraq war look like an appendectomy. But that’s the price you pay when you refuse to play Neville Chamberlain to the the laws of physics’ Hitler.

  2. Ian says:

He only withdrew from golfing after staying on the course long enough to declare victory.

  3. Jobetta says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who read this and wondered if an Onion story somehow wound up on the wire.

  4. Chris Holman says:

Reality is stranger than fiction these days…

It’s hard for me to stay calm after reading that as well. I’ve had too many friends killed, maimed for life, or put in harm’s way via his and his ilk’s negligent leadership. Does he REALLY not understand how insane he sounds when he says this stuff? I mean, is it possible that he really just doesn’t get it? I know there is a mountain of evidence that suggests he doesn’t, but jesus, mary and John Powers!
