Keep it Classy, Democrats

Someone’s been reading a little too much of Naomi Wolf’s paranoid ramblings about fascism, methinks:

“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida said at a panel about the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats Wednesday. Hastings, who is African-American, was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through,” Hastings added as the room erupted in laughter and applause.

“What they do” with them? Words have meaning. So, you just think that through.

Like I said, words have meaning. The subtext isn’t too hard to discern.

I mean, what do you make of what he said? Was Hastings talking about “bagels and hip-hop”, as it were? When he got up in front of a crowd of black and Jewish Democrats and told them that Palin is so scary that she alone is a reason to vote for Obama, what do you believe he meant by that?

What do you think his intention was when he said that people like her don’t care what people “do with” the Jews and the blacks if you don’t think he was hauling out those hoary old “progressive” chestnuts that all conservatives are crypto-Nazis who pine away for the good ol’ days of slavery?

Alcee Hastings knew what he was saying and who he was saying it to. There’s no need for you to keep looking. It’s right there.

I agree that it’s a weird logic and completely eliminates the gun-loving hunters who support an egalitarian, democratic and fundamentally sound world that accepts all people regardless of background/origin. However, I can’t seem to read what was said and get the same insinuation that you do from the comments.

    I’ll keep looking.

  3. Vincent says:

All I know is that I’m reasonably certain that Mr. Hastings was not in fact referring to eating bagels and enjoying hip-hop as things that have historically been “done” with Jews and blacks.

  4. Chris says:

What’s the point? The word “do” re: Jews and Blacks?
