Oregon Senate Race Gets… Constitutional.

According to a new survey, the Oregon Senate race has Gordon Smith and Jeff Merkley, who’ve been running two of the most disgusting campaigns I’ve ever seen, running neck and neck (41% and 46%, respectively), “undecided” pulling in 6% of the vote and… David Brownlow of the Constitution Party (?!) polling at 7%.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Constitution Party, whose Presidential candidate won the endorsement of gnomish kingmaker Ron Paul, their motto is “Life. Liberty. Limited Government.” So far, so good. Then you read their platform.

We gratefully acknowledge the past blessings of Almighty God, poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Lord. We appeal to Him for mercy, aid, comfort, guidance, and protection. We call on all Oregonians to join us in our efforts to return American jurisprudence to its Biblical foundations and to limit government to its constitutional boundaries, as we promote candidates for public office.

[…]

We demand that the national government make stemming the invasion of illegal aliens across our borders a top priority. We stand against the current practice of rewarding the offspring of such invaders with United States citizenship and the extension of tax payer funded benefits to such invaders and their families.

[…]

God has ordained sovereign nations as spheres of influence on this earth. He has assigned their administrations to civil governments for the defense of their peoples and cultures. Entangling alliances between nations interfere with that assignment and must be avoided.

[…]

The Creator defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman. The marriage covenant is the foundation of the family. […] We affirm, therefore, that no government may authorize or define marriage or family relations contrary to what God has instituted. [So much for ‘liberty’… -ed.]

[…]

We declare that pornography is not protected speech.

Uh… Woah.

It goes on like that for awhile, touching on everything from the OLCC (to their credit, they want to bury it) to paying taxes in silver coinage and banning union contracts that allow striking.

Somehow, I’m not really that shocked that these clowns are approaching 10% in the polls in Oregon. Still… wow.

(H/T: Reason)

  1. Betz says:

Well that doesn’t sound so bad, the limited government part … I mean, who really wants an all-powerful, controlling, centralized entitiy making decisions for us?

“We affirm, therefore, that no government may authorize or define marriage or family relations contrary to what God has instituted. “

oh, right …. forgot about that god fellow …

  2. Anthony says:

Agreed about Medler – horrible prof who only came to work 2 days a week the term I had him. Would leave after the first 15 minutes of his office hour time too if no one was there.

  3. Ossie says:

I kid you not, I wrote a 2-page paper on the Constitution Party for a politics of Oregon class. I think I got 6 out of 10. Jerry Medler was the worst teacher I ever had. Kelly Littlepage, the worst GTF.

  4. Sakaki says:

They are approaching 10 percent because people really are not happy with Gordon Smith.

  5. Vincent says:

The Constitution Party does indeed have a fascinating concept of the notion of “liberty”.

  6. Kai Davis says:

“We declare that pornography is not protected speech. ”

    🙁
