ODE Columnist Slams OSPIRG

ODE columnist Matt Petryni had a column yesterday laying into OSPIRG, probably one of the harshest criticisms of the group I’ve ever seen run in the Ol’ Dirty. To wit:

In the past, I have volunteered with OSPIRG. While there was some good work done, the program’s incredible overhead and fundraising operation clearly consumed most of its resources. It should come as no surprise, then, that more than two-thirds of its ASUO stipend goes not to on-campus work, but to staffers in Portland, Ore.

[…]

Now, let me be clear. If you want to donate to the harassment squad that trolls our campus on a near-daily basis, that’s perfectly fine with me. Should students be forced to pay a portion of their incidental fee to a program some do not agree with, few actually understand, and almost no one can account for? The answer is clearly no.

Yeah, get some! This is what the ODE opinion page needs more of: strongly worded columns about concrete campus issues. Petryni wins a beer next time I see him at the bar. Don’t get me wrong; I love reading Anastasia STRGAR’s sex columns, but …

  1. Devin Scarfe says:

Michelle: your pillow felt good last night

  2. Rockne Andrew Roll says:

For it to sell on the coast, it would have to be a pirate themed wood carving or a shot glass. Trust me on this one.

  3. Chris says:

Really? I always thought it depended on who was being tempted. You know, like those anonymous people that show up because they somehow managed to sniff out the keg in the back of the party and they with their merry band of freeloaders roam in and drink your beer….

    I hate those people.

I think it makes sense to target who you tempt. In fact, that’s my new motto: “Target Who You Tempt” . I’ll even make a cool yellow bracelet that says “TWYT” and sell them at some pointless shop on the Oregon Coast. I’ll make dozens of dollars!

  4. CJ Ciaramella says:

Tempting people with more beer has positive outcomes in all situations.

  5. Chris says:

It was the Commentator being channeled by Petryni….loved it.

  6. Sakaki says:

Tempt them with more beer, and you may see more good columns like this.

  7. Betz says:

I agree: Its nice to hear something that is actually strongly opinionated and to the point, without all of the floundering literary flourishes of a WR 101 freshmen. Good job! The ODE opinion page would be much more respectable with more articles like this one.

Speaking of sex columns, did anyone else notice the “Sponsored Links” on the ODE page at the end of the column? There are two:
    1) “Home Services Guide”
    2) “Sex Toys”

  8. Michelle Haley says:

I was so excited to read this opinion piece. It is by far the best thing to come from the ODE this year–ignoring the subject matter, it is well written and factually sound, but the subject matter does act as the icing on the cake.
