Eugene’s Draconian Smoking Ordinance Strikes Again

The back deck of Espresso Roma, a favorite haunt of UO riff-raff and one of the last true smoking dens in Eugene, is now a no-smoking area thanks to the city’s asinine smoking ordinance. (You may remember when the city fined the Horsehead Bar and Grill for its offending row of shrubbery.)

After walking out on the back deck and seeing the multitude of no smoking signs, I managed to get the story out of one of the employees through my rudimentary Spanish:

“Hey, guey, por que no fumar?”

“Porque la ciudad.”

“iPinche ciudad!”

The Roma thing doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. Yesterday was the first day that I really needed a sheltered alternative since the signs went up a couple weeks ago. Rennie’s proved to be more than satisfactory.

It was quieter because there weren’t any shrill high school girls, I sort of think the Rennie’s patio might be cleaner, and I could drink Bushmills instead of coffee. I’m starting to see pretty major upsides to having a new midday hidey-hole.

This just keeps getting worse and worse. We need more smoke-ins!!

Another reason emerges for the famous nickname: Depresso Roma

It’s what you get for harboring a disgusting habit, you disgusting human being.
