Three in the Morning Links

Since all those other blogs have their fancy-pants “morning links” posts, I thought I’d get the jump on them and do some three in the morning links:

  • Computer game developer 3D Realms has closed down, meaning Duke Nukem Forever is finally dead after 13 years in development. Play him off, Keyboard Cat.
  • State Rep. Gene Whisnant wants to change the state song. Any suggestions?
  • A bill just unanimously passed the state house that would require state colleges to allow people over 65 to audit classes for free. I propose the bill be named the Wilford Brimley Continuing Education Act.
  • Eugene residents are trying to get the three-story tall “O” on the south side of Autzen taken down.

O no, it is a brand war ! The appeal hearing on this pretty cult signage is Wednesday at 1 pm in the Atrium building on the third floor (Saul room). The Ghost of the White Stag is on the march. What is next ? The removal of the magical indoor waterfall at the athlete wellness center (former wrestling room space) ? Bellotti- this is your first mission. Defend the sacred O ! Or you can hide and send Francis Dyke instead.

  2. Betz says:

    My vote for state song:

I’m gonna kick it old school:

Whatever motivates her is not really the key. The main point is the sign is illegal and the city of Eugene makes it a habit to exempt UO from laws that apply to any other businesses in town. After the Portland sign war folly I suspect anyone who would challenge UO signage may want to play hardball and is probably quite serious. This topic should be further explored in the Hate issue.

  5. thunderlove says:

This would make the perfect state song

  6. C.T. Behemoth says:

    Citizens of Eugene!

Stop fucking yourselves and your city! It’s an “O” and whether you like it or not you and your city are better off with the “O” than without. Stop whinging about every tiny little thing so that nothing ever gets done and the economy is driven into the ground by your antics. Oh….wait….

As for the state song, I think it should be something like “You Aint’ Got A Hold On Me” by AC/DC on ’74 Jailbreak http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bElYRFkFO4

Letting old people study is fine, but they can’t take up spaces that students need, so they should be allowed to enroll after everyone, preferably Monday of Week 1.

As for 3D Realms…I imagine we’ll be seeing some Classic Game version that compiles all of their good work. I mean, who was FPS before them?

  7. Rockne Andrew Roll says:

Good song to describe the state, or at least its government:

“Bitch Went Nutz” by Ben Folds

  8. Ross Coyle says:

I really don’t like the O myself. While it’s not a big enough deal for me to get worked up over, I wouldn’t mind if it were gone tomorrow. So if someone else wants to fight this fight, I’m all for it.

  9. Ross Coyle says:

Ahahahahaha Duke Nukem Forever gets the tank. I don’t think there’s anything else to be said.

  10. Josh M. says:

Ossie, I can’t get onto YouTube here at work, but I’m going to assume that at least one of those songs is by Rick Astley.

  11. nike urbanism duk says:

The Gestapo is angry that some dare to resist the sacred and all powerful O ! Can they pass a new student fee to fund the legal effort to keep it in place ? Frohnmayer is “proud of the brand”. There are some guys living on compounds in Montana and Idaho that are pretty proud of theirs too.

  12. I kind of want that Teenage Dirtbag song. Remember that one?

I dunno, I think that encapsulates Oregon pretty well.

  13. Ossie says:

There’s one song worth calling the state song. Go Ducks!

    Close runner up.
