Opening Weekend for College Football

“Be vewy, vewy quiet… I’m hunting for wabbits!”

Well our first Saturday of college football is over, and it had some interesting storylines indeed. Besides Oregon’s own loss (and suspensions) some pretty surprising things happened this weekend.

In case you missed it, Sam Bradford, last year’s Heisman winner, left the game against BYU with a sprained shoulder. BYU went on to upset Oklahoma, almost certainly dashing OU’s title hopes (anyone who thinks OU is going to run the table in the Big 12 South is insane).

There are two things I noticed about Pac-10 schools this weekend. The first is that California may be really, really good. Hanging 50+ on Maryland is crazy, especially when you consider that some experts had this one pegged as an upset in favor of Maryland. This may be proven wrong, however, if we learn that the ACC is just really, really bad (or it could be both).

Additionally, after watching Washington lose to LSU I have to say that Washington may actually field a decent team this year. Last year they didn’t win a game, and they almost certainly will this year. Looking at their schedule, I’m tentatively saying 5-7 (beating ASU, UA, ID, WSU and Stanford). If I had to pick an upset for them, I’d say they may beat Oregon when they travel to Seattle (I know, sacrilege!). But their offense has some weapons, and if Jake Locker and Chris Polk are healthy, Nick Allioti’s “bend-and-not-break” defense is going to get picked apart.

Here’s how the major 5 conferences fared (sans Big East)

Big 12: 10-1 (Colorado plays Colorado St. Sunday)

Big Ten: 9-1

SEC: 11-1 (Ole Miss plays Memphis Sunday)

Pac-10: 7-3

ACC: 4-6 (Miami plays Florida St. Monday)

The weekend was exciting, to be sure, and I think we’re all looking forward to what’s going to happen this season. Duck fans especially. See you at Autzen on Saturday, when we take on Purdue.
