Senate Resolution, Once Again

Sens. Schultz and Tipitino have proposed yet another change to the Pacifica Forum resolution. In an e-mail sent today, Schultz said:

Dear Senate,

I have worked extensively with several of you, especially Senator Tipitino. Enclosed is a copy of an amended resolution. Demic and I intend to make the following changes to the resolution prior to sending it to Rules Committee. Please look it over and think about it before Wednesday.

To be sure, the situation is beginning to get out of hand.

ASUO Student Senate, January 28, 2010
Student Senate Bill SS.R.? (2009/2010)

Authored by: Senate Vice President Nick Schultz, Senator Demic Tipitino and ASUO Executive
Sponsored by: Senator Mercedes Whitecalf, Senator Castenada, Senator Zach Stark-MacMillan, Senator Chris Bochichio, and Senate Ombudsman McCafferty
SUMMARY
Condems the actions of Pacifica Forum members and supports the University Administrations decision to remove them from the EMU
Section I.

1.1  Whereas, the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO) is composed of an Executive and Legislative branch, both advocating for issues and concerns shared by students of the University of Oregon.
1.2  Whereas, the ASUO acknowledges and respects the right of all individuals and organizations to engage in unrestricted speech.
1.3  Whereas, the ASUO supports the Affirmation of Community Standards of the University of Oregon which seeks to “Reject bigotry, discrimination, violence, or intimidation of any kind.”
1.4   Whereas, recent comments and actions by members of the Pacifica Forum have degraded many students on this campus, and represent backward and untrue ideas.
1.5  Whereas, a large segment of the student body has expressed that they feel unsafe due to the situation surrounding the Pacifica Forum.
1.6  Whereas, the EMU is the center of student life, the home of a diverse student population, and paid for with the intention of enhancing the cultural and physical development of the students of the University of Oregon.
1.7  Whereas, students pay for and control the Erb Memorial Union, and desire that it remains a safe space for all student groups.

Section II.
2.1  Be it resolved that, the ASUO unequivocally condemns the recent comments and actions by members of the Pacifica Forum, and the ignorance these ideas speak to.
2.2  Be it further resolved that , the ASUO supports the Administration’s recent decision to move the Pacifica Forum to a campus location outside of the EMU and recommends this decision become permanent.
2.3 Be it further resolved that, the ASUO encourages students to stand in solidarity against the views and actions of members of the Pacifica Forum, and encourages the administration to maintain the safety of all parties involved.

  1. C.T. Behemoth says:

The more I see Pacifica Forum attached to the shit that went down in the EMU, the more I think this becomes/looks like a witch hunt (regardless of whatever the reality is). People who are involved in either situation would be better served to not connect the two (e.g. in the Emerald today, Esparza basically says, “I know that it’s wrong to insinuate that the PF had anything to do with this…” BUT I AM GOING TO DO IT ANYWAY. Stupid.

  2. Lyzi says:

We didn’t start the fire, but we sure as shit have been fueling it.

  3. SEC says:

“as much power as the UN.” Comments like this always bother me because the UN does a lot of great things apart from attempting resolutions. Yes the UN resolutions have no back bone but resolutions ARE NOT the only thing the UN does, or even the main thing.

    /rant over.

I’m curious to see how this proceeds, especially since the Emerald reported that Lariviere claimed to have “created a new policy in attempt to keep the Pacifica Forum off campus, which University lawyers are reviewing.”

    hmmmm…..

  4. Senator Schultz says:

C.T. Behemoth — thanks for your input

  5. C.T. Behemoth says:

“but emailing [email protected] is always a great idea.”

    Unless you’re Haggerty.

  6. C.T. Behemoth says:

“Whereas, recent comments and actions by members of the Pacifica Forum have degraded many students on this campus, and represent backward and untrue ideas.”

Isn’t this more of a ‘clean up your act PF’ line since it’s not the PF at all that did the action but unnamed members? Not sure the legal spirit of this one falls in line with what seems like the goal.

“Whereas, a large segment of the student body has expressed that they feel unsafe due to the situation surrounding the Pacifica Forum.”

The ASUO would be wise to remove “a large” from that line. If the protesters allegedly numbered at 400, that’s 2% of the student body.

“Be it further resolved that, the ASUO encourages students to stand in solidarity against the views and actions of members of the Pacifica Forum, and encourages the administration to maintain the safety of all parties involved.”

If I were being consistent, I’d add “and the Pacifica Forum” after administration in that last line.

  7. Sean says:

Good thing Senate resolutions have about as much power as UN resolutions.

  8. Senator Schultz says:

I for one feel as though progress is being made. Thank you for spelling my name correctly, something that other campus publications have had some difficulty doing.

I look forward to a lively senate meeting. We will pass a resolution of some sort. I try to check the OC blog as often as possible, but emailing [email protected] is always a great idea.
