Campus Now Marginally Less Diverse
So, farewell then, Gregory J. Vincent. After eighteen months of coordinating the more-chaotic-than-usual diversity effort on campus, our Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity will become Vice Provost for Inclusion and Cross-Cultural Effectiveness at the University of Texas.
He will be remembered as a law professor who encouraged student officials such as Dan Kieffer to break the law if they feel like it, as one of the administrators whose bad advice led Toby Hill-Meyer into this year’s quixotic battle against the press, and as a diversity maven who responded to the safety concerns of minority students who didn’t toe the party line with, at best, silence. We wish him all the best for the future.
I loved the Emerald’s editorial yesterday. They actually said that the future of campus diversity is in jeopardy (or something to that effect) just because this overpaid bureaucrat is leaving. Greg Vincent is a joke. Forcing diversity through quotas and set-asides is just like a communist-style planned economy- it ignores the free market and therefore leads to gross inefficiencies. We should let diversity happen on it’s own, driven by the forces of diversity supply and diversity demand. I guess I’m what you’d call a “laissez-faire diversifier.”

Yup. I can’t imagine Vincent planned on staying long. He just wanted another line on the resume, and I can’t say I blame him one bit.

Austin’s a great town and a helluva lot better than Eugene in many ways: lots of great places to eat, superior weather, greater numbers of attractive women, a better economy, and a reputation for not being messed with. But do they have a Frog or Frog-equivalent? I think not!

Gee, I didn’t see that coming. Supporters and detractors can point to whatever they like, but I don’t think Vincent ever planned to stick around long. A job like his, you can’t afford to stick around: The longer you’re here, the more obvious it is that you aren’t earning your paycheck.
I figure that both Vincent’s supporters and detractors will point to the criticism he has received as the cause of his departure. I suspect that this is not the case. Pretty much any faculty member here at the UO who is offered a comparable job at UT would be crazy not to take it. Increased pay, higher prominence, and better weather are hard to argue against.
Has someone given a heads up to the students at the U of T? They deserve warning. A list of Vincent’s “achievements” here should be forwarded to the student newspaper.
