Ah, my beloved Max’s.

Max’s in Maxim

According to one of my sources (Olly), Max’s is featured as the “bar of the month” in the newest issue of Maxim. The story isn’t online yet, but I look forward to reading it as soon as I can my hands on an unprotein stained copy.

Has anyone actually seen the Rennie’s Landing movie? I was unaware that it had actually been made. Apparently yes, and according to IMDB parts of it were filmed in Eugene. Can I pick this up at Flix and Pix? Blockbuster? Hollywood? I’ve tried the online movie stores, Amazon and E-bay and none of them have it….

Finally, I’ve been using the new census results for my specialized reporting class, and some of the results were pretty interesting. You guys should try typing your addresses in and looking at the results for your block group. The neighborhood from Patterson to Willamette between 13th and 18th is 99% rentals, if I remember correctly.

Speaking of Drudge

This story about German Satanists is pretty interesting. By ‘interesting’ I of course mean, “frightening and sick beyond all human capacity to rationalize.”

The Washington Post is apparently having some trouble understanding deficit spending. I especially like the bit in the first paragraph about this “worsening the government’s financial outlook” or some such nonsense. FYI: Deficit spending is GOOD during times of recession and economic struggle. Sure, it crowds out some private spending, but the tax cuts should level that out a bit.

And, from our very own Register Guard, it seems that kids in Singapore do better in school. I’m sure that American students would do much better under penalty of caning and other forms of abuse. You know, it’s illegal to chew GUM in Singapore. That’s right, no gum.

Anyone interested in gun rights should read this thread on Instapundit. And, while I’m on the subject of guns, I’d like to note something I covered in an earlier link. There’s a scene in Bowling for Columbine where Michael Moore goes into a bank, opens an account, and comes out with a free gun. Now, if I remember correctly, it is a FEDERAL CRIME to even possess a firearm inside of a bank branch. Would this mean that Moore has effectively filmed himself committing a felony?

OC Publisher in the Oregon Daily Emerald

An excellent guest commentary by OC Publisher Bret Jacobson appeared in the Ol’ Dirty Emerald today. I am glad conservatives are denouncing both insensitive comments and the misguided policies of the left. Hopefully, the Republican and Libertarian vision of a “color-blind” society will prevail in America’s future.

Five years ago…

Matt Drudge has posted a self-congratulatory piece on the discovery of the Lewinsky scandal five years back. Included are the original webposts that broke the story. I was unaware that the world’s oldest newswire, Agence France Press, listed Drudge’s breaking story as one of the top ten events in 20th century media.

Excellent interview with John McWhorter in Salon.

[The influence of black culture on white culture] is good because we’re moving towards getting past race. Al Sharpton wouldn’t like that, but we’re going to get past it. Getting past it does not mean these communities of wary blacks and wary whites eyeing each other and writing Op-Eds about each other.

McWhorter also reckons that Theo from the Cosby Show doesn’t deserve affirmative action. Poor old Theo. Everybody’s always on his case.

Bill, I’m sure we’re doomed to sit through a Dukes of Hazzard movie at some point in the future, but don’t bet the farm on anything published in the Sun. It’s like USA Today without the intellectual rigor. More nudity, though.

From a gossip column in the UK Sun:

“YEEEHA! Cult TV comedy The Dukes of Hazzard is being made into a feature film. BRAD PITT is set for the lead part of Bo Duke and TOMMY LEE JONES will play bungling Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane.

The telly series ran from 1979 to 85 and followed the escapades of Bo, brother Luke and sexy cousin Daisy as they fought corrupt police and evil Boss Hogg in their famous red Dodge Charger car, General Lee.”

Who’s going to play Daisy? Jennifer Aniston? I don’t know if that would be such a good idea, but I’ll nominate Danny DeVito for the part of Boss Hogg.

Civil Libertarians Beware

I picked this up from Instapundit. That damned Daschle is trying to curb private property rights via the resurection of last year’s RAVE act. Glenn Reynolds also weighs in on the previos RAVE act.

The EU is also poking its damn nose in where it doesn’t belong by probing Hollywood movie producers. It’s not enough that they conglomerate on currency, they have to investigate companies BASED IN THE US.

And, finally, the President is taking a stand on the U of Michigan admissions policy.

Finally checked out those “SUV/ Terrorism”ads by Arianna Huffington et al. Ridiculous but entertaining. Certainly no more offensive than the repulsive “Vicodin/Al-Queda” ads we’re barraged with daily.

“Real Time with Bill Maher” is set to debut on HBO on Feb. 21. Yeah! Finally, Oliver Stone, P.J. O’Rourke, Snoop Dogg and Janeane Garofalo together again.

Less than an ounce equals more than $100… developing…

Kudos to Pete for isolating my very, very least favorite line from Episode II. There was competition. God, was there competition. You know the way Denise Richards was somehow never typecast as a nuclear physicist after that nightmarish Bond movie? Hayden Christenson (sic, probably) manages to be equally unconvincing in the role of an English-speaking human being.

Adaptation is spectacular, though.

This Week’s Sign that the Apocalypse is Upon Us

Lucas has a script ready for Indy 4? Let’s hope not. I don’t think anybody was blown away by his penmanship on Episode II. Is Harrison Ford going to be reduced to saying “I hate sand… It’s coarse and rough, and it gets everywhere,” to a fetching young Nazi lass? Sean Connery as a CGI character?

Has anyone seen the Terminator 3 trailer? It looks awful. Dumb and Dumberer? Jesus…. Where’s Titanic 2?

Incoherent Ramblings

Not much happening in the national news that I can find. Other than a somewhat intruiging article in the Chicago Sun-Times about possible dissent in the Republican ranks. Actually, I take back my former statement, the recent resignation of a Mr. Steven Case, of AOL-merger fame, has brought many questions to the table. I myself find the possibilities to be very exciting, especially considering they just released the new and utterly fantastic, as always, AOL 8.0. Anyway, back to the point, I found an interesting story about a possible AOL spin-off, though sadly no news about that rumored Enron spin-off. I’m sorry folks, I guess you’ll just have to wait until next season to see if they actually do that.

In local news, Eugene has become relatively warmer today and is lacking of the 8:00 morning fog that I was growing accustomed to waking myself up to for the always enjoyable J203, taught by the remarkably outstanding Mr. Duncan McDonald. But enough about the weather.

I found a new issue of the Oregon Voice today, and found that their backpage was actually amusing, sadly they lack a current website. So instead of seeing this amusing backpage, just picture what the Commentator would do if it created a drinking game for geeks with a D8 and a D4. I must say the rest of the issue was rather poor and the cover gave the misguided impression that it was geek-themed.

To go along with this miracle of miracles from the Voice, the Ol’ Dirty had a surprising editorial in support of college atheletes forming a union which I’m guessing was written by Kleckner. Also in the Ol’ Dirty today is an unexpected dis by Julie Lauderbaugh, todays Emerald Commentary writer, and for the record I only played Magic: The Gathering in middle school.

Finally, because Pete has been emotionally unstable since the passing of Maurice Gibb, I felt that I should give him solace by showing him that the remaining Bee Gees, are fighting the good fight to make sure that their brothers death was not due to the involvement of a doctor who still had a grudge over the infamous Disco-era due to his inability to grow an afro.

Death of a Bee Gee

Pete — My sources tell me Aaliyah’s brother has the inside track to take over for Gibb. Unfortunately, Steven Tyler will return as “Leader of Future Villain Band.”

Staying Alive?

Maurice Gibb—dead at 52. Will he be digitally replaced in unshot Sergeant Pepper II scenes?
