My experience is that whenever racism happens in Eugene there is often a quick response suggesting that it’s not typical. This makes minorities who speak up about racism seem like complainers. They are marginalized as troublemakers or opportunists.
From Milagro Vargas’s opinion column in the Register-Guard. Allow me to go on record as marginalizing Vargas as a troublemaker and opportunist. I say this not because I understand what it’s like to be a Hispanic female in the School of Music, but because Vargas fails to back up her claim that a not so subtle atmosphere of racism is present in Eugene and at the University of Oregon.
Vargas won’t perform in Eugene because she doesn’t want to be the “token minority performer from the UO School of Music.” Is Eugene really that bad? Come on…
Read this piece and make up your own mind. I think it’s a pretty hollow claim.
