If the Oregon Commentator was a fledgling student group at Donna Shalala’s University of Miami, it’s more than likely that the OC would be turned down for official recognition. That’s exactly what happened to students hoping to found Advocates for Conservative Thought:

They submitted an application to the student government committee that oversees clubs asking for recognition but were refused, they say. They continued meeting anyway, but learned when they tried to hold a support-the-troops rally during the Iraqi war that without university accreditation they could not advertise on campus, invite speakers or use school facilities. They resubmitted a revised constitution to the club oversight board, but were denied again.

You see, Miami already has a conservative student group — the College Republicans — and by the board’s reasoning, that’s enough. Hmph. The students have enlisted the help of University of Pennsylvania professor Charles Kors, who wrote the following to the board in support of the group:

UM recognizes, rightly, that ‘liberal’ does not mean ‘Democrat’ … Why, then, does your institution believe that ‘conservative’ necessarily means ‘Republican?

Precisely.
