College Credit for Pushing Obama’s Agenda

Crossposted over at The Weekly Standard:

I received an email at my University of Oregon account today informing me that there are “intern opportunities with Organizing for America,” formerly Obama for America. According to the email, OFA is launching what it calls the “National Organizing Internship” for college students around the country. From the email:

Organizing Interns work side by side with OFA staff and community leaders to help build support for President Obama’s agenda. They will learn core organizing principles that are crucial for any campaign.

President Obama describes his time as a community organizer by saying: “It was the best education I ever had, because I learned in those neighborhoods that when ordinary people come together, they can achieve extraordinary things.”

This is your chance to get that same education.

If you’re passionate about making sure every American has quality health care, reviving our economy, and building a clean energy future, don’t miss this great opportunity. No previous experience is needed in order to apply.

Yes, you, too, can learn how to walk door-to-door and hand people flyers! You will also learn core phone-banking principles and how the OFA staff prefers their coffee. And yes, students are eligible to receive college credit for pushing the president’s agenda, provided they set it up with their school. Become a cog in the great hope machine today! Just don’t call it astroturfing!

    “UO History Alum”:

    ??? ?? ?????? ? ??????? ???????? ?? ????? ???????? ??????? ???? ??? ???????? ? ??? ?? ???????? ? ?????????? ????????

  2. CJ Ciaramella says:

    Obviously, the history department turns out some real scholars.

  3. UO history alum says:

    I do not think Vincent knows about Ivan, that smiley guy makes a lot of good points. But a better comparison would be a 95 year old clown…meaning Id rather have a 95 year old nutbag than Obama. what a joke, vince your the worst….you suck.

    You sound like an Obama lover, wait id that so bad to call you out on a conservative sire, you bum.

    Whatever they put in the drinks at Urban Grind Coffee House up in Portland is clearly not very good for the brain. -ed.

  4. Miles Rost says:

    On the first point, though, we can state for certain that both of them were petulant man-children who should have been given corporal punishment when they were very very young.

    Spank your children, they’ll not only thank you but make you proud in the end.

  5. Vincent says:

    1) Ivan IV was 3 when he was proclaimed Grand Prince of Moscow. Barack Obama is almost 50 when he was democratically elected by the voters of the United States. Drawing any sort of comparison between him and the infant monarch of a medieval despotism is insipid.

    2) It’s probably redundant at this point, but any sort of babbling about “nationalization of business” in medieval Russia only reveals that you haven’t the slightest idea what you’re talking about.

    3) Did you just seriously liken “cap and trade” to serfdom?

    Please tell me this is all tongue-in-cheek. Seriously.

  6. Orev says:

    His second, third, fifth and sixth points are all pretty valid. Young, no experience: check. Conversations that are pointless: check. Nationalization of businesses: check. Increased cost of energy and ruining upward mobility: check. Revered by many in DC, who are scared of being called a racist for disagreeing with him: CHECK.

  7. Vincent says:

    Straining superficial similarities to the very breaking point: Just do it.

  8. Smiley says:

    Vincent interesting post. I think you meant it as a joke, but Ivan does have some characteristics in common with our President.

    -Ivan was the first Tsar of Russia, Obama wants more Tsars in his cabinet and wants to be the first dictator of the US himself
    -Like Obama, Ivan gained the throne at a young age and without any experience
    -Ivan played a large role in opening “conversations” between Middle Eastern nations and Russia, which were largely fruitless
    -Ivan greatly restricted small business in order to create government ran enterprises, Obama Cap and Tax/Health Care/Union Support…need I say more?
    -Obama has increased the cost of energy and therefore increased the cost of transportation, likewise Ivan ruined peasant mobility in his country, which lead to serfdom.
    -Ivan was revered by many confused Muscovites, who were basically scared of him…Obama…enough already

    Maybe Ivan IV is a good comparison to our current president. Let’s just call him, “Obama the Terrible”.

  9. Vincent says:

    …let us have our country back.

    After eight years of Bush, I’m not even sure what that’s supposed to mean.

  10. Orev says:

    Yeah, Vincent, that was pretty clever. I agree with Miles. Go back to the state senate, Obama, and let us have our country back.

  11. Miles Rost says:

    I just go with the standard “Obama = Fucking Moron” idea. Because, happily enough, you can’t argue with the truth. Obama is a fucking moron.

  12. Vincent says:

    If you’re one of millions of Americans like me, “Bush = Hitler” got old years ago… but “Obama = Stalin” just wasn’t cutting it. I decided to talk to my doctor, and he told me about “Obama = Ivan the Terrible”.

    “Obama = Ivan the Terrible” gives me all of the spittle-flecked hyperbole I want… when I want it.

    Some users have reported nausea, dizziness, and inability to make rational decisions while using “Obama = Ivan the Terrible”, so you should not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how your body will react.

    Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use “Obama = Ivan the Terrible”, as there is a risk of birther defect.

    Potential side effects may include:

    -Damaged credibility;
    -Subjection to ridicule;
    -Lack of coherency;
    -Loss of elections;

    “Obama = Ivan the Terrible may increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, aneurysm, despondency, or suicide, so you should stop using “Obama = Ivan the Terrible” immediately and consult a doctor if you experience symptoms of:

    -Wanting to post blog comments about how the President wants to take us back to the 17th Century;
    -Trying to convince strangers that the President was born in Kenya;
    -Believing the phrase “Obamination” is clever;
    -Finding Sarah Palin to be an astute political commentator and thinking she has a fart in a hurricane’s chance of becoming President in 2012.

    “Obama = Ivan the Terrible” does have a risk of dependency. You should not take alcohol in excess with “Obama = Ivan the Terrible”, as this increases the chances you will look like a titanic douche.

    “Obama = Ivan the Terrible” was right for me! So talk to your doctor and find out if “Obama = Ivan the Terrible” is the vapid comparison that works for you!

  13. Mary says:

    Its hard to calm down (if I understood correctly) When this is life and not a movie, our financial welfare depends alot on what people “push” through. And going back to the 17th century or pretty darn close, wont suprise me a bit.

  14. Emily says:

    I really need to see BTF IV, but I’ve heard that Back to the Future V, where Marty has to slay a mastodon is really the power film.

    Also, everyone needs to CALM DOWN lately. The US political world is getting a little jumpy.

  15. Timothy says:

    Back to the Future IV : Marty’s Colonial Adventure!

  16. CJ Ciaramella says:

    […] attempting to drive our country back to the 17th century?

    Seventeenth century might be a bit of stretch …

  17. Vincent says:

    Figuring out what’s “astroturfing” these days is so confusing! It’s like, if I show up to some “town hall” and ask questions about the health care plan, everyone’s accusing me of “astroturfing” and being a Nazi and unpatriotic and stuff…

    But when the President sends out mass e-mails to get supporters to canvass neighborhoods for college credit (!), it’s just concerned citizens supporting a health care reform that will benefit All Americans(tm)?

    It’s like… I don’t know what’s real anymore! Please, Mr. President, tell me what to believe!

  18. Orev says:

    You have got to be absolutely f’ing kidding me. College credit for learning how to spend with reckless abandon, apologize to anyone who will listen and attempting to drive our country back to the 17th century? Sign me up, to vote him out of office.
