ODE: On The Right Side Of History

As stated above in Dan’s letter, we all know that the magazine has been under attack from the minicrats on the PFC. They understand neither viewpoint neutrality, First Amendment precedent, or even what it means to regulate content:

But Quiroz said he is not judging the magazine’s content, but rather how that content might affect students.

Mason, then, would like to hold the OC responsible for how other people (or person, in this case) feel about the content. As Dan has brilliantly outlined above, there are very few circumstances when this is the case legally and the PFC is has neither the authority nor the understanding to make such a judgement.

Aside from that, I wanted to direct everyone to today’s ODE editorial. It shows a depth of understanding, makes the point logically and swiftly, and is really very persuasive. Today’s editorial is a far cry from Kleckner’s rancid treatment of the issue back in the MEM days. They didn’t even waste column inches talking about how unworthy a publication the OC is before they defended our right to exist. What’s more, the ODE is on the right side from the get-go this time. So, kudos to them. Or “quacks” as they would put it.

  1. Pete says:

Oh man… I know nobody is going to read this comment, but I just had a huge LOL moment reading the ODE’s editorial after our “You Fucking Racist” issues were stolen by… well… we all all know who stole them. Bitch. But regardless… check this out:

The current issue is a case in point of tastelessness: In the “Drinking Holidays” article, the Commentator includes Purim (a Jewish festival), which the writer suggests celebrating, with tongue perhaps firmly in-cheek, “by drinking yourself into an angry fury and lashing out at the Jewish-controlled media, the Jewish-controlled government,” and so on.

This level of speech goes far beyond the Commentator’s usual level of “merely asinine.” The context of the paper is always unclear — when are the writers doing parody, and when are they being serious? No one can know. These words, then, calling for people to get drunk and lash out at a specific group of people based on their religion, rise to the level of hate speech, and if the Commentator staff is even capable of feeling shame, they should.

No one can know. No one can know. No one can know. OMG! So funny!

  2. Timothy says:

Tyler: You’re right, the ODE was on the right side of some pretty major stuff last year and I’m glad to see it continuing. I haven’t had the time to follow closely, so that’s heartening news indeed. I was nervous about Sudick’s statement that she was a lot like Kleckner, and that she invited Special K to do some staff training, so it’s good to be proved wrong on that.

As for the Insurgent: They definitely have a right to exist, even if they don’t think we do. The Voice on the other hand…I kid, I kid.

  3. I’m hoping the OC wins my friends. As it says on the back of one of my old debate shirt
“I may disagree bitterly with what you have to say, but I’ll fight to the death for your right to say it.”
    Another one says
“I never learned anything from anyone with whom I agreed.”
At any rate this is one College Dem liberal transplanted from Wyoming who is on your side.
    Peace,
    Chris

  4. Tyler says:

To be honest, Tim, the ODE has been on the right side of some major issues for a while, at least since last year. We dont have to bring Special K into this. That man was a journalistic crime against humanity; he deserves to write nothing but obituaries for some rag in the Kalahari Desert, forever subsisting on grubs and the flesh of the bodies he has destroyed with his pen. But its nice to know that Jen Sudick and her posse are continuing in the proud tradition of Brad and Jan. However, I dont find this too surprising. Last year, when the ODE was facing its own problems, we came to its defense. And wed do it again, for sure. Hell, Id even come to the Insurgents defense if it faced a similar predicament, if only to maintain the constant level of hilarity that that publication provides. Im not saying that the Emerald feels as if it owes us anything its not like we made some quid pro quo deal with them last year Im just saying that I know these people, and theyre good people. Theyre definitely smart enough to know that Dan is smarter than the PFC.

In any case, did anyone see my interview? Wow, I was really tired when I did that. It showed. Why do Emerald reporters call at, like, 9:00 pm when you havent slept in 24 hours? Its a freakin crime I tells you.

  5. WWB says:

    “Minicrats.” I like that.
