PFC Dinner Theater (sorry, no dinner provided)

Our next hearing is scheduled for February 10th, 6 PM in the Ben Linder Room. the Emerald hearing is at 5 so we should probably rally for them, too.

  1. Timothy says:

Autumn: that’s how it was intended.

  2. Michael Waymire says:

I know that Adrian was attacked, I was just saying that he almost got in a fight also, and I do believe he would have been able to handle himself… I know that I wouldn’t want to mess with him.

  3. Autumn says:

I’ll take that as a compliment Tim. Also…I’d add Dave to that list (is he a black belt yet?). I found all of this quite hilarious. I didn’t expect anything like this to ever happen. I’ve been to dozens of PFC hearings and that was the weirdest and most bizarre one yet. I’m so far removed from all of this and just went down there to support Olly and stuff. It was well worth the drive.

  4. Timothy says:

Where speech becomes conduct is where we draw the line, and I’m sure anyone who assaults a member of our staff will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Personally, though, I think neither Adrian nor Autumn is a particularly good person to start a fight with.

  5. Danimal says:

Adrian didn’t “almost {get} into a fight.” He was nearly attacked, and would have been but for the intervention of DPS. If attacked, I’m sure he would have responded, but he was not the aggressor. The OC doesn’t play rough. Leave that for the armband crowd and their lawless martyr, Mason Quiroz.

  6. Michael Waymire says:

I had never gone to any of the ASUO or affiliated groups meetings before, but I will always be glad that I went to the PFC meeting for the Commentators budget hearing. That had to be the most outrageous yet entertaining meetings I have ever sat through. I know that they voted your mission statement and goals down, but the entire process of Mason quitting and him and the PFC president squabbling throughout the night, and Adrian almost getting into a fight, and everyother random and wacked out thing that happened was worth it. By the way I hope and do think that the Commentator will get its funding, if not on the 10th then through the law suit that the Commentator has every right to file. Anyway, I cannot wait until the 10th, will all of the publicity this thing is getting, there is going to be a horde of people, and a whole lot of controvercy. Thanks for a wild ride guys!

  7. Andy says:

This all steems from what i thought to be were basic concepts that all humans could agree upon. I though personal responsibility and seeking the truth, even if you were wrong, were important. Although the connection might not be as clear to some, almost every media on this campus persuades the, yes ignorant and impressionable, minds that attend here to run to big daddy for money and protection, and not look to themselves to get by in life. I’ve spoken with economics majors that said they voted for kerry becuase they had to think about the benifits they’d need from the government in the future. We all saw the rediculiousness on tuesday night of government, again, and that is why im so greatful that the Commentator is here on campus.

If you guys ever need help with distribution, send me an e-mail also.

  8. Timothy says:

And they do a damn fine job of it most days.

  9. Olly says:

Andy: reasonable people can disagree. Even if the ODE’s editorials aren’t to your taste, I think the “poisoning young minds” bit is, um, nonsense. (Besides, what’s wrong with frivolous content?)

Besides, it’s well worn ground for conservatives to gripe about the vast liberal-media conspiracy and for liberals to decry the corporate media machine. The ODE, as per their own mission, is obliged to put themselves in a position where absolutely everyone thinks they’re horribly biased against them.

  10. Marla says:

With all due respect, the lack of a spell-checker is not the most serious problem here…

  11. WWB says:

Not to pile on (too much) but it’s OSPIRG, not OSPRIG. I can’t stand that group (after all, I did almost defeat their ASUO funding measure) but it always bugged me to no end when their name was misspelled.

  12. Andy says:

    oops. ya’ll need a spell check 😉

  13. Anonymous says:

It has to be said. It’s: THEIR, NOT THIER!!!!!!!

  14. Andy says:

My criticism steems deeper than the issue with the commentator. Repeatedly I have seen extreem bias in the way they report thier news, and just because on this one issue they have been on your side, it isn’t a pass for me for what has been institutional praise for socialism, OSPRIG, and many other of thier editorials and views which are completly opposed to your mission statement.

I suppose now I sound like a liberal bring up the bad about Bush and Iraq when they just had elections, but I just don’t want the ODE to get a pass on all the “content frivolous at best” that has lead to the polarization and posioning of young minds on campus. What can you expect when day in and out its liberal, liberal, liberal in that paper. I’m glad that Furtwangler is there, but i’m not sure i’ve ever seen a conservative peice in thier independent newspaper.

    in yo face Andy

  16. Jan says:

Andy: Respectfully, it’s not an easy task to put a tense meeting like that, which I imagine ended at some ungodly hour, into a concise, well written article with all the facts when the reporter probably had an hour to write it, under deadline pressure no less.

Also, the Emerald does not have over a million dollars to pay its employees. The average reporter (at least during my time) made somewhere between $75-$100 per week and easily worked 8 hours a day.

  17. Josh M. says:

Now Andy, I don’t claim to be “in the know,” but in this case, as a news item rather than an editorial, I think the ODE was working to present a neutral view of the meeting and present the facts absent any sort of bias. I think the several editorials and commentaries by both the individual and collective staff of the Emerald make clear where they stand on this issue, at least to any daily reader. When compared to those opinions, today’s news item would certainly look more sympathetic, but the ODE has been nothing if not supportive throughout this whole mess.

  18. Timothy says:

I actually think that quote makes Mason sound like he’s high and insane.

  19. Anonymous says:

I greatly appreciate the support they’ve given to you; thier editorials are typically thought out and well presented. But, since this is a political battle, as we saw last night, articles which increase the polarization, give PFC members cannon fodder, and incite purple arm band wearers to pressure the PFC against thier purpose, and to violate constitutional law, aren’t exactly helping your cause. Was there anyone there that read the emerald and came away with the idea that the 1st amendment was gonig out the window on campus? That is not the message that is being sent with the “reporting.”

    Beginning with:
“I just want to publicly state that I don’t support this part of the branch of student government anymore,” Quiroz said in the final moments of the hearing. “I think it’s obvious that our money is going to hateful speech … I don’t care, I don’t care. Kick me out. I resign from my position right now. You guys are sleeping with the devil.”

and “In a battle that pitted the First Amendment against whether it was appropriate to publish materials some consider offensive..”

It doesn’t make sense to me to give that 2nd statement when the emerald came under the same exact subjectivity the commentator did. Thier (PFC) inability to comprehend thier purview will continue, and protests will be rallied to the cause of a “just” desicion being made in favor of the students “cultural wellfare.” What was the beef with the theft of ODE’s and off-campus publication?

Hopefully the ODE will clarify thier position that this is clearly a 1stAmd issue, the PFC is illegal in thier actions, and focus a little more on removing the bias of thier reporting.

Of course it is hard to publish a daily paper, but that’s why they have a budget of over a million dollars and pay thier employees. The economics of that “cannot be denied.”

Im just worried that the average student population is getting the wrong message from this mess, and i’m sure that some believe that the OC should be cut. The focus needs to come off the “hate speech” and more onto the budget like the PFC chair did last night.

But you’re right Tim. I was wrong to be so harsh. I support thier existance utmostly as an avenue of speech, yet I disagree with thier message.

  20. Ian says:

What was the nature of Mason’s threat, and was that caught on tape?

  21. Big M says:

Trust me, we have the Emerald on our side. This is a for certain.

And, apparently, on the website for the Student Senate Positions, PFC position #3 is vacant. Eh? Eh?

  22. Timothy says:

I agree with Dan. The ODE have been staunch supporters of our right to exist for a long time, even Kleckner (who hated us) felt we had a place in the campus environment. Some of their reporters suck, okay, that happens. They have some copy errors…have you read the OC?

While I might find a lot of the ODE’s content frivolous at best, they’re on our side on this issue (the most important one in a decade) and it’s not right to belittle that. It’s damned hard enough to publish a magazine and go to school, I can’t imagine trying to do it every day.

This doesn’t mean I won’t continue to make fun of stupid headlines, or taunt poorly written columns, but to say the ODE has done anything more than support the Commentator against the OC, or to call it a “piss poor excuse for a daily student paper” would be neither polite nor correct.

  23. Danimal says:

I don’t know, Andy, I thought the article made him look more like a fool than a martyr.

  24. Andy says:

you know what, the emerald is a piss poor excuse for a daily student newspaper. These journalists are supposed to be paid money for thier writings after college?? That reporter was there for the entirety of the meeting and even tape recorded it and to publish a story with quiroz looking like a martyr…well…i suppose it just sounds a little like cnn to me. Nevermind then! I suppose twisting reality to fit your political agenda is right on target in this country, and especially this campus.

  25. Sho says:

Thanks for the heads up, Flood. If all goes well with my work schedule, I should be down next week. Rock.

  26. Tyler says:

Word on the street is that he’s trying to get his position back. The problem is that his resignation was caught on tape, making it a public record. I highly doubt that Persis is going to relent and allow Mason back on, especially after he threatened her last night.

I think we could make the case that Mason is an extremely troubled 28-year-old man-child whose lies, threatening demeanor and unprofessional attitude should prevent him from holding public office. But who knows, maybe will be more fun with Mason on PFC.

  27. mene says:

That makes it easy to schedule it in. See you all on the 10th if not before.

  28. Big M says:

    You got that right, y’all.

Any news on who’s replacing Mason?
