Oregon Not In BCS Bowl

With LSU and Virginia Tech losing today, Oregon will likely move up to the #5 spot in the BCS rankings. We’re still screwed, though. Notre Dame will move up to the #6 spot (despite their two losses, including one to 5-6 Michigan State) which, as a team that is not in a major conference, gives them an automatic BCS bid. Ohio State, at #4, also qualifies for an automatic bid.

In other words, Oregon gets screwed. Thanks BCS!

UPDATE: Pissed off? This is the sonofabitch you should be blaming.

  1. Grant says:

Hey im an Oregon fan and I was Pissed about the BCS to but Notre Dame almost beat USC thats got to count for some thing

  2. kevin says:

sorry no OFFENSE intended! btw who granted you absolute authority over my opinion, seems to me this whole mess turns out to be over notre lames strength of schedule. if they had a record of 9-2 against quality opponents no one would be griping right now, hopefully this concept isnt to lofty for you to perceive also

  3. Mindi says:

Thank you for leaving on the CAPS LOCK function. Your futile attempt at a good point is noted and dismissed.

  4. KEVIN says:

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE HAS TO BE TAKEN IN CONSIDERATION,IF YOU SCHEDULE ALL PATSYS AND GO UNDEFEATED WHAT HAVE YOU ACCOLMPLISHED? IE NOTRE DAME….WHILE INITIALLY IT APPEARED TO BE A STRONG ONE…. REALITY DICTATES IT WASNT! IF MORE WEIGHT WAS APPLIED TO STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE IT MAY MAKE TEAMS MORE ACCOUNTABLE

  6. Mindi says:

    That’s my vote, too, Tim.

  7. Timothy says:

Dammit, why not, “If Notre Dame refuses to join a conference, screw ’em!”

  8. Mindi says:

    (found it!)

The Notre Dame rule that all conference commissioners signed off on for the BCS rules:

If Notre Dame has nine or more victories and is eighth or higher in the final BCS rankings, they get an at-large spot.

Talk about buying your way in.

  9. Mindi says:

And, while fair is a good and fine ideal, this is college football we’re talking about…was it fair for Oregon to deal with Fife and his mullet? Is it fair that Willingham had such a crappy season at UW? (oh wait, that one was…)

It’s more about money than anything, especially fairness.

  10. Mindi says:

Actually, FSU gets in because they are conference champions…

The BCS’ eight spots are filled with:
The No. 1 and 2 teams in the poll (who both hopefully fit in the next category)
The conference champs from the: Pac-10, SEC, ACC/Big East, Big Ten, Big 12.
    At-large spots/Notre Dame

The Rose gets the Big Ten and Pac 10 (unless it’s this year, when they get 1 and 2)
    The Sugar gets SEC champ
The Orange gets ACC or Big East
    The Fiesta gets Big 12

    Pac 10 = USC = Rose
    Big 12 = Texas = No. 2 = Rose

    Big ten = at-large = Penn State = Orange
ACC = Florida State = Orange
(Because Bowden vs. Paterno sounds good to old people)

Big East = West Virginia = Sugar
    SEC = Georgia = Sugar
(Because it’s closer for WV…and, in fairness, they’re 10-1, too)

Fiesta gets its pick, but Ohio State finished in the top four without getting a conference champ spot, so it gets in.
And, because old people matter and young alumni who have money don’t, Notre Dame (with it’s new! coach) goes.

Technically, the bowls can pick any of the top 11 teams in the final BCS ranking when all the bought-in conference champions are assigned to a bowl.

    Confused yet/still?

  11. Anthony says:

    Florida State #22 with 4 loses….hmmm.

  12. Tyler says:

I believe this boils down to three words: strength of schedule. Still, it’s pretty shitty.

  13. Timothy says:

Okay, please explain how FSU with an 8-4 record and a #22 ranking gets a BCS birth and we don’t.

Why not just take the top eight-ranked teams? Wouldn’t that be more fair?

  14. Mindi says:

The BCS is, surprisingly, not at fault this year…at least not directly. Notre Dame, and its magical deal with the BCS, is what screwed the Ducks. Fuckin’ Notre Dame. Hey, tradition, take this and shove it up your ….

  15. Dan says:

I’m F#$%ing sick of the BCS!!! and the fact that the ducks got screwed again. I am a Duck Alumni but I support all Pac-10 teams so I was ticked when cal got screwed too. All i want is a playoff system the do it for coll BB so why not football it would be fair and you couldn’t blame the results on a computer.

  16. Ian says:

Ohio State is very good this near, despite having two losses. I feel they deserved to go ahead of Oregon. Notre Dame, West Virginia, and Florida State? No way in hell.

  17. Anonymous says:

Notre Dame will still strike some “screw everyone else deal” just like they did with the BCS, and still make the tourney before other deserving teams. The only fair way any tourney or bowl system will work is if it goes by record and not by opinion polls. Oregon got screwed and so did TCU. Proof positive this year that the entire west coast has no respect. Ohio State is good (not great) and Notre Lame is gonna get smeared up and down the field.

  18. A playoff system will be instituted.

The Main Bowl will be rotated among 7 bowls: Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, (presumedly Capital One, Peach, and Cotton would be the next big bowls).

Top 8 play in 4 bowls, the winners move on to play in the next two, the winners move on to the championship.

If it’s the same people winning year after year…then it’s the same as the BCS now.

And yes, a monkey throwing shit at the wall is a better system than the BCS.

  19. Timothy says:

Not to worry, congress is on the case!

  20. ian says:

In favor of what? A monkey throwing feces at a wall covered with the names of college teams?

  21. Expect the BCS to be scrapped within 2 years.
