OC Elections Interview Series: Lee Warnecke

Lee Warnecke is running for Seat 11 against Jamin Burchard this week in the primary election for the ASUO senate. We would like to remind you that voting began today, and urge you to participate in the process! Hey, the ASUO may be fucked up, but it’s our student government, and we need to do something about it. Vote.

What made you decide to run?

I’ve spent the last 3 months as a Senate Intern, I’ve seen how things work in the ASUO board room, its intriguing and exciting work, and I’d love to do it.

Are you part of a slate?

Sure am. Campaign for Change. We’re twenty civic minded students sharing an open slate that offers diversity, experience and passion in politics.

What makes you stand out as a candidate?

I guess I’m a lot like the other candidates, just a student who feels a sense of civic responsibility and can’t wait to help solve problems, meet new people and become more involved with the University of Oregon.

What do you see as the most pressing problems with the ASUO?

Currently, a lack of direction. In the senate especially a rift exists that is dividing two very separate minded groups of senators. Once personal politics are set aside, real progress can be made.

What would you most like to accomplish, if elected?

Help in the institution of longer Knight Library Hours and continue the work of Senate Bill 28 in solving the existing problem of future recreation center funding.

Why do undeclared students need your representation?

Do they care about any of this stuff?? They should care about it, it’s their money. I’ll get into that in a second, as for why me: I lived in the dorms, I play basketball at the REC, I’ve practically taken up a second residence in the advising center, I am your typical undeclared student. I feel that I represent my constituents as yet another confused college student enjoying their time here but still uncertain about their projected field or profession. Also a large number of undeclared freshman students are those living in the dorms. The recreation center has proven that freshman far outnumber all other students in taking advantage of the equipment and facilities of the rec center(more than 80 %). I feel undeclared students need my representation because they need someone concerned with the funding of the Recreation and Student Advising centers. I’d also like to hold office hours in the dorms.

In this section we ask candidates to pick one from each of the following pairs, and provide a brief justification for their choice.

Budweiser/Labatts: Miller Genuine Draft. But Budweiser gets the nod over Labatts.

Elvis/The Beatles: Haaa…honestly? Neither, both put me to sleep.

Fried Rice/Chow Mein: Chow mein @ House of Noodle.

Football/Basketball: Basketball. Go Blazers. Rookie of the Year: Brandon Roy.

Sunni/Shia: I think the other interviewee’s have it right here. Sad that such a huge rift exists between sects of the same religion.

Whiskey and Coke/Rum and Coke: Jager and Redbull?

Beerpong/Flipcup: B.P.

Hemingway/Fitzgerald: Hemingway. Old man and the Sea was one of my favorite bedtime stories when I was little.

  1. Miles says:

Wouldn’t that be like listening to Yoko Ono straight up.

  2. Jared says:

Listen to Helter Skelter – that one will wake you up, I can promise it.
