Dotters-Katz Blasted for Being White

Up late doing a paper due later today, I naturally am wasting my time online and checking the OC and ODE. In the Daily Emerald today (man, I am up way too late for this…) an article is featured about the Ethnic Studies departmentalization resolution that was almost presented to Senate last night. I saw the person that was going to present the resolution. At the time, I didn’t know that it was ASUO Executive Candidate Sam Dotters-Katz…anyways, I was excited for it to happen. Then he disappeared from the meeting.

I stepped out into the hall about an hour later, and I found Dotters-Katz essentially being harpooned by Jennifer Lleras, Kari Herinckx, and Oscar Guerra about the Ethnic Studies issue and race relations. Having dealt with Ethnic Studies majors off and on for the past two years, I can tell you that listening to any Ethnic Studies major is excruciatingly frustrating. I actually went BACK into Senate instead of listening to them talk.

Anyways, the article in the ODE quotes Oscar Guerra as saying that Dotters-Katz was making the resolution to benefit his ASUO Exec bid. True or not, I like how Take Back Campus is just getting people involved and this resolution is a political move. I really don’t see any difference in the two, except that putting a resolution before Senate actually is doing something instead of just bitching for two hours and calling it good.

But I suppose the real difference is because Dotters-Katz is white, so anything he does must be a political move. And Take Back Campus was organized by more “people of color”, so it cannot be related to elections in any way.

  1. Sean Jin says:

Touche. Agreed that frank’s point is equally irrelevant.

  2. Ford says:

You’re right, it has nothing to do with anything. His race should be/is irrelevant. “frank” apparently doesn’t think so, however, and I was trying to show the absurdity of the race/color argument. I suppose the subtlety of the message was lost in the typing.

  3. Sean Jin says:

“Dotters-katz not white? Have you seen him?”

Ford, what does that have to do with anything?

  4. Josh M. says:

No disrespect meant to you, Guerra Sucks, but I’ve never really taken any pride in being white or, for that matter, male, or straight. Not that I am ashamed, mind you, but I’ve never found a reason to be proud of something biological and therefore, beyond my control. I completely understand being proud of something that you or someone you know has accomplished in the face of (real, not imagined) racism or any other -ism, even though as a white, straight male, I’m not subject to many -isms. But, for me personally, I’ve never understood people’s pride of anything that they don’t control. Maybe it’s just my white privilege speaking.

  5. Ford says:

Dotters-katz not white? Have you seen him?

  6. Sean says:

“I am 2nd generation Indian and proud of my heritage, proud enough that I don

  7. frank says:

And for all of your information, dotters-katz is jewish which really wouldn’t make him white by todays standards

  8. Jackson says:

I would like to present the following conversation that deserves debate:

    “Offended by Inst. Racism Says:
    March 14th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

    Guerra Sucks,

As a white person, you cannot criticize a student of color

  9. Ford says:

Let’s not pass hastily by the wisdom of “gulley is scum.” I believe it is a Zen koan; an attempt to quiet the terrible sound of grim gnarlicon gnashing his hammers.

  10. Sakaki says:

Sean: You flatter me. Be thankful you’re thin, otherwise you’d flatten me.

  11. gulley is scum says:

gulley dronks his own pee because he thinks he is a demi-god

  12. Sean says:

    No, but Sakaki curb-stomps them.

  13. Sakaki says:

But does Grim Gnarlicon Smash puny Humans?

  14. GRIM_GNARLICON says:

GRIM GNARLICON KNOWS HOW TO USE HAMMERS. TO SMASH FACES.

    HAIL SATAN.

  15. Olly says:

    (No?)

  16. CJ Ciaramella says:

Is it time to dust off the ol’ banhammer?

  17. Vincent says:

I’ll point out that “Offended by Inst. Racism” and “Cheerio” are posting from the same IP address. It’s a troll. Don’t feed it.

  18. Jobetta says:

Ted, it would be fun if you were around to cover Senate this year. To answer your question, Kari Herinckx did not get elected last year but has been working for the Executive. She’s the multicultural advocate.

  19. Guerra Sucks says:

and for your information I am 2nd generation Indian and proud of my heritage, proud enough that I don’t have to call other people out irresponsibly and falsely to prop myself up

  20. Guerra Sucks says:

I can criticize anyone’s opinion I find issue with, because it will always be based upon that specific opinion’s content, not on the color of the person’s skin who says it. But clearly the fact that you state that my disagreement with Oscar is racism, when I never mentioned anything about his race, show’s you love of accusing people of racism just like Oscar. Did you notice I also spoke against the opinion of Gulley? In fact, my issue was equal with both students. But you didn’t call my opinion of gulley racist. Quit the double standard reverse racism and free your mind from your self-righteous bullshit please for all our sakes.

  21. Offended by Inst. Racism says:

    Guerra Sucks,

As a white person, you cannot criticize a student of color’s opinion because that is racism. You are a privileged white person and don’t understand the history surrounding issues of race and identity. I’m tired of having to educate you on these matters. Its called an education people. Stop the institutional racism! Oscar works hard for social justice. He deserves nothing but respect.

  22. Guerra Sucks says:

Our next president’s first action should be to absolve the senate, re-militarize deady hall, proclaime themselves vice-roy, and raise the flag of sudsy proudly over the emu

  23. Niedermeyer says:

grass roots campaign, street militia, tomato, tomahto

  24. Sean Jin says:

Oh Ted, be nice. Your grassroots campaign is just beginning.

  25. Niedermeyer says:

Aw, thanks Neid. You flatter me with your creepiness. Unfortunately I don’t live in the Euge anymore… wait, did I just say unfortunately? Also, I don’t really remember that debate so well. I sure hope I didn’t embarrass myself.

  26. ThunderLove says:

Every move the candidates make now is a political move. I just took a big shit and told my roomate about it Just to get him involved. in closing I would like to say Thunderlove is all about ethnic women, persians are my favorite.

  27. Cheerio says:

    Education is a right!

  28. Where's Neid says:

Niedermeyer we need to have a face to face, I am a really big fan, and would like you to autograph my REO Speedwagon LP. I also have your debate from last year pretty much memorized

  29. Ossie says:

My question is, does the ASUO really need to have back-to-back Executives who graduated from Forest Grove High School? (First McLain, now Herineckx?)

I may be wrong, but in my four years of high school, I don’t remember ever losing to the Vikings in any sport. Granted, it was no Woodburn High, but I wouldn’t say that they really breed winners out there in FG.

  30. Bryan says:

Ted, thanks for keeping it real.

    Sean, I hate you.

  31. Niedermeyer says:

Heh, if I remember correctly I actually endorsed Guerra last year. He saved me some embarassment by losing spectacularly along with the rest of PAC-8. Speaking of which, is Kari Herynckx really a contender, considering she couldn’t get elected to Senate (or something) last year?

Kudos to Dotters-Katz for getting out in front on an issue that the programs machine wants to monopolize. Some crazy political instincts there… But if these kids are really running on a “fiscal responsibility” platform, it’s best that they get used to being called racists as early as possible.

Oh, and Guerra’s a douchebag… gotta stay real for the fans.

  32. Where's Neid says:

Wrong, Mel Gibson was first, then dotters-katz, then Vincent

  33. Vincent. says:

Wait, a white guy having more tolerance than a minority?! This has got to be a first!

  34. Sean says:

Damn, Vincent. You must have much higher tolerance than me.
Speaking of which, I just lost the game…

  35. Vincent. says:

    To say nothing of skullduggery.

  36. Vincent. says:

I’ll call him out for wankery, tossery, and general asspunkery.

  37. Where's Neid says:

Niedermeyer would have called out Oscar for douchbagerry

  38. Vincent. says:

    Sean:

Err, I am on campus, at least until I get my second degree in June.

  39. Sean says:

Wow, this game sucks. You are lucky you aren’t on campus anymore, Vincent. You would either be broke from alcohol costs, or dead from alcohol poisoning. Or both.

  40. Vincent. says:

I can’t see why ANYONE could possibly be wary of the politicization of Ethnic Studies after reading this.

In any case, it seems clear that many of the supporters of departmentalization are openly racist.

  41. Sean says:

Sounds like they are a match made in heaven.

  42. Guerra Sucks says:

Gulley and Guerra will never allow someone who doesn’t bow down to them have a fair say in Senate. They both are so in love with themselves they have forgotten who they serve.

  43. Timothy says:

He should just start calling other white people racists, seems to work for Gulley.
