City of Eugene tries to “raise cultural competency” for ’08 trials

In preparation for the ’08 Olympic Trials, the painfully white City of Eugene is bracing itself for an influx of mysterious, dark-skinned athletes by giving diversity training to volunteers, police and hospitality workers. I don’t know what’s funnier – the actual story or the news anchor’s faux outrage. Maybe it just sounds a lot stranger to people who haven’t been embedded in this bizarre Bermuda Triangle of crazy for the past two or three years. For example, when I watched this I said, “Yeah, that sounds about right for Eugene.” Thanks to Mike G. for the tip.

The taser will be a sustainable efficient happy initiative to maintain the”shining campus” new order cultural competency paradigm. do not feed the athletes. Take them to the private learning center immediately. The media shall not attend. However some large shrimp rolls and cheap champagne will be available for those who can keep their fucking mouths shut(like our loyal commentator. The new equipment must be recalibrated before the return of the mothership. Protect the goose egg donation. When it hatches a shining new learning neighborhood”gateway” will emerge. The great one will be pleased.

I would comment but don’t really know where to begin. However, I do know it ends something like: “oh how I adore fox news…”

  3. Chris Holman says:

Reminds me of mandatory equal opportunity training in the Army, and it does ring of the diversanoia people feel in this city (it seems).

  4. Vincent says:

For what it’s worth, here is a report from the Daily Emerald that’s significantly less hysterical than the Fox News clip. Evidently, one of the members of the “Blacks on Track Team” said that “the training for law enforcement as well as hospitality workers is not something about which [she has] any knowledge.”

Wouldn’t be the first time that Fox News has blown a story way out of proportion.

  5. Sean says:

I like how she essentially equates African-American with diversity.

  6. Vincent says:

Wait, wait, wait. Learning how to give black people directions to 1) black churches 2) barbers 3) soul food restaurants? And they’re worried about offending people with hip hop language? For fuck’s sake, why not add “make sure to stock up on watermelon and malt liquor” to the list to make sure they’ve covered all the stereotypes?

Can anyone imagine a more coddling, infantilizing, and condescending attitude for this city to take toward athletes who just happen to have darker skin?
