Musharraf Resigns

President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan has resigned after almost ten years of military rule over the state. It was about time. Pakistan won’t miss Musharraf. But our government certainly will miss one of our staunchest allies in both Pakistan and the entire region.

Eh, we’ll be better served sending money and gifts to the Ukraine. Because, unlike Georgia, they have missile bases from which the US can put a nuke up Putin’s nose.

Putin wants a cold war? Well, here, let’s give him some sinus pressure! BAMMO!

  3. Chris says:

I’ve always been surprised at how much support we threw toward a military dictatorship…given our geopolitical enterprise a couple thousand miles to the West. Of course, I realize that blatant hypocrisy is often a crucial requirement of states’ foreign policies.

I don’t think we’ll miss Musharraf too much as long as the new government commits itself to anti-terrorism. It’s not like Musharraf’s government was stunningly effective in that area, even if it was at least rhetorically reliable when it came to “fighting extremism”.

I don’t think even the Bush Administration expected Musharraf to accomplish much when his own intelligence services were riddled with corruption and agents tacitly or openly supportive of “militant” groups.
