I ain’t passed the bar, but I know a little bit

Someone in our comment section brought it to our attention that the cease and desist letter sent by the Oregon Action Team to anonymous person(s) it accused of libel was actually a sample letter cribbed off the Internet. For use against the Opus Dei, no less. Here’s the first paragraph of the sample cease and desist letter:

Dear Sir or Madam:

This CEASE AND DESIST ORDER is to inform you that your and the Opus Dei cult’s harassing and intimidating actions against my fellow Catholics and I has become unbearable. Such anti-social behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in any way, shape or form. This letter is to demand that your and the Opus Dei cult’s continuing involvement in, planning and encouragement of, high-pressure recruitment, information gathering, harassment and intimidation must CEASE AND DESIST immediately. Should you and the Opus Dei cult continue to pursue these activities in violation of this CEASE AND DESIST ORDER, we will not hesitate to pursue further legal action against you and the Opus Dei cult, including, but not limited to, civil action and/or criminal complaints.

Now go back and check out the OAT’s letter. You can’t make this stuff up.

  1. Vincent says:

    Wow, that’s super.

  2. Chuck says:

Here’s a description of Opus Dei taken directly off their website (www.opusdei.org). Too bad so many today feel threatened by attempts to develop our faith in God and grow closer to Him:

Opus Dei is a Catholic institution founded by Saint Josemar

  3. Rich Lee says:

I’ve seen that anti-opus dei letter on the internet. As far as I can tell, it’s a post by someone who doesn’t like the organization and who attempts to give their views a legal spin.

  4. Matt says:

Good lord. They even had it written for them and they still wrote with the grammar of middle schoolers. Unbelievable.

Did the Commentator get any letters of this sort, threatening legal action if you didn’t stop bashing OAT? I would love your critical analysis on that, CJ!

  5. Jobetta says:

The only reason I know that Opus Dei exists is that I read “The DaVinci Code.” Are they such a problem that there needs to be a Web site devoted to telling people how to threaten them with legal action? Or is that site a joke?

In any case, the comparison to the ASUO letter is funny as hell.

  6. Ian says:

They got 99 problems but pickin’ a cabinet ain’t one.
