ASUO Senate Feb. 3rd Recap

Last night’s ASUO senate meeting passed the most recent resolution to be voted on by the rules committee next week. The resolution that we have currently does not have last night’s amendments included. We have requested the revisions, and will post them up as soon as possible. The final revision that will be voted on will come out next Monday.

When it was time for the ASUO executive announcements, student body president Emma Kallaway unveiled the newest model for the upcoming ASUO logo.

When this was revealed Sen. Ben Fisher muttered under his breath that the logo looked like a mushroom cloud sending the whole room into uproar. Kallaway mentioned that the logo had been screened by fifty people and no one had noticed the resemblance.  It’s kinda like that picture that can be either an old lady or pretty woman depending on your perception. ASUO is still looking to solidify a slogan, and for that we would like to start our newest contest! Best ASUO slogan suggestion in the comments section wins a new sudsy shirt! New shirts are coming next week in green, navy blue, and black.

The meeting was a pretty tame one in contrasts to more recent ASUO senate meetings, but that all changed in the last five minutes. Senate President Gower was called out by Senate Vice President Schultz for violating the speakers list. Seconds before the meeting ended Schultz called for Gower to step down from his position.

Yes loyal readers, ASUO  fight club is back, and just in time for election season.

  1. Voldemort says:

Nick Schultz in Fight Club? Please! Motherfucker tried to pull the plug on OSA’s funding! That’s like calling the Bay of Pigs guys commies.

  2. god bless stevee m says:

schultz = resigning white guy // gower= stupid white guy

You guys suck. Why don’t you kiss each others asses by the mill race and jump in. We can call it an ASUO marriage. Fun fun. Then you both resign and wrok at Mucho Gracias for life.

This is bullshit! Kallaway knows the rules best?…did you know she has a crummy gpa and is white, ill be it a weird lookin white though. Gosh.

  4. G-Dawg says:

Oh Schultz, you are just bitter that Emma sits at the president’s desk.

  5. Senator Schultz says:

Actually I said that I would step down if I received 11 emails from members of the Senate that asked me to step down. If I had received 11 emails saying that there was a problem with my leadership ability and wanting me to step down, then I would have done so.

I would not step down because 11 senators don’t like an idea of mine.

    Sorry to disappoint ya 🙂

  6. C.T. Behemoth says:

Schultz did say he would step down two meetings ago if he received 11 emails against the resolution at the time. The vote was 11 against. : )

  7. Senator Schultz says:

And I admit that I was wrong to show such blatant disrespect to President Gower. While I maintain that what I said was correct, an outburst such as last night is not professional and unacceptable.

I apologize to students, the public and the ASUO for acting in the manner that I did. I will work to improve my behavior.

MB: as I am sure you will read later…I have no intention of stepping down

  8. Gower says:

To be fair to Schultz, he originally challenged the speaker’s list. I believed I had discretion to not adhere to the order, which I do . . . but Senators ARE capable of challenging the order of the speaker’s list. This I did not know: I am not perfectly versed in Robert’s Rules. My intentions from straying from the speaker’s list were not political, but to facilitate discussion.

That being said, any Senator has the right to challenge the speaker’s list.

    I admit my wrong.

  9. MB says:

I think Schultz’s call out is hilarious. From what I saw, Gower was trying to give a Reinhardt the chance to speak since Stark-McMillian had already spoken several times. The whole point of of having a chair is to make sure that debate is fluid and that everyone gets a chance to speak.

Robert’s Rules even explain that the chair/president should always prefer those that have spoken least over those that have spoken more. Schultz’s assertion that Robert’s Rules say that you have to go by who gets on the list first is entirely fabricated. Moreover, if he really disagreed with Gower so strongly rising to appeal the decision of the chair would have been more appropriate than yelling at Gower to “Step Down.” Seriously? Schultz wanted to be Senate president at the beginning of the year, but couldn’t even manage to learn some basic motions. Seems like Schultz needs to take a break from decision making, since he seemingly can’t make appropriate decisions concerning his own behavior.

slogan contest entry: Don’t Hate Us for Hating Hate
