College Republicans: Burgers, Sunshine, & Art Robinson

It is quite rare to find a full plate of food including a drink and dessert for $5. Such will be the case this coming Saturday as the University of Oregon College Republicans put on a barbecue featuring Robert Powell and Art Robinson as guest speakers.

While alcohol will not be provided, vegetarian options will be available. The event will be open to all regardless of where they lie on the political spectrum. The barbecue will be held outside at the Lane GOP headquarters (2225 Coburg Road Eugene, OR 97401) unless it rains, but we all know it never rains in Oregon. The event will run from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and students are welcome to show up at any time during the event. The speakers are scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.

Zach Webb, Chairman of the University of Oregon College Republicans, discussed the event with the Commentator.

Melissa Haskin: What is the purpose of your barbecue?

Zach Webb: There are three underlying purposes for the barbecue.

The first is to provide a fun, social event for members of the campus community and the community at large.

The second is to raise funding so that members of our club can attend various events, as well as allow us to bring in guest speakers that all members of the campus community would like to see; our club does not receive incidental fees, so events like this barbecue are important for fund-raising.

The third purpose of this barbecue is to give its participants the message that it’s important to get involved with causes that are important to them.

MH: I noticed that the time for the barbecue is from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., how much of this time is set aside for the speakers?

ZW: As of right now, Robert Powell is scheduled to speak at 3:00 p.m.  Thirty minutes is the approximate time that his speech and a Q & A section will last.  Art Robinson will be speaking at 4:00 p.m.

MH: What will the speakers be talking about?

ZW: The speakers will be discussing the importance of having convictions and becoming active in causes that you believe in.

MH: The best way to get students to an event is with food- so let’s talk about your food. It’s a barbecue, so are we talking the traditional barbecue fare? What kind of dessert will be provided?

ZW: $5 will provide those attending with chips, a drink, a dessert item, and their choice of either one hotdog or hamburger. Cupcakes will be provided, as well as other baked goods.

MH: geomium.com says you’ll be auctioning off “several mementos,” is that true?

ZW: There will be several items auctioned off privately, which include autographed photos of conservative leaders that have been given to the club over the years.  All the proceeds will go towards funding the club and ensuring that we have a more visible presence on campus next year.

The University of Oregon College Republican’s barbeque will be held on May 21st from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Lane GOP Headquarters. If you have questions, the CR’s can be reached at [email protected]. Their weekly meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Rogue River Room.

  1. Lyzi Diamond says:

I am DEFINITELY going to this, if only to have a heart to heart with Art Robinson <3<3<3

  2. The meal is cheap and comes with a dessert for $5 because the Lane GOP subsidizes the meal to attract you to their toxic stew of propaganda and banker/oilman political uberpower agendas. Maybe Robert Mercer, the secret Robinson campaign donor, added more Wall-Street Bush-bailout Hedge-fund spoils to the Lane GOP budget to cover the beanie-weenies and Spam.

Can I get an autographed photo of your GOP Godfather, David Koch?

UO students can look forward to 2012 as the year of annoying GOP outreach and astroturfing – After all, we students are the ones who can make them….or Break them. They are sooo Old and washed up.
