Mostly Nonsexual

Hot (well, lukewarm) off the wire:

Man passes self off as UO professor

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) A Eugene man passed himself off as a psychology professor, fooling dozens of students at the University of Oregon, according to police in Eugene . . .

Vaifale posed as a professor to gain the trust of students and to develop relationships with male and female students, investigators said.

The relationships were believed to be mostly nonsexual, police said.

The article goes on to reveal his MO:

He dressed professionally, carried a briefcase and frequented Straub Hall, where the psychology department is located.

I don’t get it. I’ve seen real professors do a whole lot less than that and skate by alright. They should give this man tenure. Show me a professor, real or not, who’s not using survey classes as a radical bully pulpit or clogging academic journals with critical meta – post – decon – neo – jibbajabba gibberish, and I’ll show you a guy who’s not bothering anybody.

But then that phrase: “mostly nonsexual.” So much left unsaid.

UPDATE, MOMENTS LATER: Obviously I don’t read the Emerald much. Forgive me.

  1. Melissa says:

Mostly nonsexual… but didn’t Toby say that he knew people this guy had been in relationships with?

  2. Jan says:

People probably figured they didn’t recognize him because GTFs taught all his classes while he “worked on a book.”

  3. Mario says:

What are you talking about we actually attended his lectures and they were outstanding.

    sincerely,

    Olden Polynice and Al Martin

  4. Melissa says:

Read: Toby was interested in him, and now feels let down.

If the LGBQTA can’t tell the difference between real profs/students and fake ones, do they really have any credibility on campus? No.

Oh, and Toby? People do make up lives all the time. They fake private and professional lives, often convincingly. How fitting that this man would imitate a psych prof when he himself has psych issues!

I read a statsitic somewhere that 50% of all people who fake lives will die before the age of 35. Maybe they should start a campus-funded support group to make themselves more visible? We could call it the PLA (Pathological Liars Association)or the LFSC (Life Fakers Student Center). UO funds anything these days.

  5. Clint says:

Our favorite pseu… nevermind, poor taste apparently.

    Anyway, connect-the-dots.

‘University graduate Toby Hill-Meyer, a volunteer of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Alliance, said that Vaifale was an active community member and a member of the LGBTQA’s sub-group, Bi and Beyond, since fall 2003.

“He participated in discussions and was in the drag show,” Hill-Meyer said. “I know people he’s been in relationships with so I’m going to trust that most of what I know of his life to be true. That’s not the kind of thing you can fake.

“I feel awkward from my interaction, but I value what he has brought to the community.”‘
