The ASUO is so Emo

In what seems to be the cool thing to do now in the ASUO, Senator Steven Wilsey has resigned from his postion on the Senate and PFC. According to the Ol’ Dirty, Wilsey resigned because he disagreed with the additional funds PFC allocated to the Veterans and Families Students Association.

According to the article, Wilsey objected to what he perceived as advocacy by the ASUO Executive to spend as much money as possible. Wilsey was willing to allocate $3,000 to the group, which was about $3,000 under what was asked.

The article also called Wilsey one of the committee’s most influential members saying:

“Wilsey was usually the first to speak during each budget hearing and hardly ever voted in the minority. He displayed his knowledge of the committee’s numbers often and discouraged other members from straying from the model he helped to create.”

The problem here is not Wilsey’s feeling of being slighted. Through the process of the ASUO and the PFC it has been determined that his recommendations, once made, are up for debate among the PFC. It is not the place of the executive or the senators not on PFC to put any sort of political pressure on those voting to approve budgets. If you are going to do that, at least have the courtesy to do it in the privacy of your office. Why have a finance committee when you are just going to come in and tell them what to do anyway?

The ASUO has long been rank with unprofessionalism. My question to Senator Wilsey is why now? Especially at the end of PFC season. It seems like in resigning, Wilsey has given up. Yes, he was undermined and marginalized, but that’s usually what happens to people who try to change the ASUO. I guess if it was me, I’d be pretty pissed too.

Just to let you all know, VFSA received $4,500 for next year.

  2. Ossie says:

Shadow I agree. How sad is it, by the way, that it has taken 25+ years for students to give money to a veterans group? I am fine with the VFSA getting a lot of money because it should have been receiving money for years. The Senate has no problem with tossing out thousands of dollars for students to go compete for themselves and earn some resume builders on the students

  3. Shadow says:

As much as I am for responsible spending by the ASUO, I believe VSFA is top priority….

    Wilsey is a pansy….

  4. K says:

I am sorry but are you fucking kidding me… what is wrong with senate this year? We had one senator quit because he couldn’t handle pressure and another quit because something didn’t go his way! I am tired of these senators having such an idealistic approach to government, especially the ASUO government.

  5. Sean says:

I guess if anything, Wilsey proved that exec appointments aren’t going to be pushovers for the exec later.

Senate Meeting today was even more ridiculous, blog post to follow.

  6. Drew says:

    bitches aint shit?

  7. Ossie says:

Interesting this went down between an exec and an exec appointee to the PFC.
