Citizens To Oregon: “Give Me A Dollar”

While I’m happy to talk about gay marriage – one of the few political issues in this world that I find entirely unproblematic – ad nauseam in the comments section, the most surprising thing I see in the news today is that Measure 37 is passing.

As the saying goes, now it gets interesting. I can’t actually believe that this measure means exactly what it appears to be saying. So if the city of Eugene expands, and property values near the original growth boundary decline as a result, someone is liable to pay the landowners the difference? Does this work the other way? If the state can establish that their actions increased the value of your property, do they get to pocket the cash? Even without that last bit, it still sounds like insanity, but as a wise former Editor once said: “I’m just a guy with one kidney – what do I know?”

  1. Danimal says:

Andy, do we need to email you a copy of the constitution or something? “Representative government” does not equal “being enslaved by the state.”

  2. Andy D says:

Oh yea totally. I love being enslaved by the state. It rocks. Fucking idiot citizens, how dare they question the omnipotent state!

  3. Casey says:

Hopefully, the Leg. will get into this steaming pile of dung known as Measure 37 and remove the teeth out of it. What a piece of garbage. Oregonians prove time and time again why representative government is better than an endless stream of referendums written by morons.

  4. Danimal says:

Now it gets interesting? Sorta. In that now it goes to court in a hurry. No way are Oregon governments going to let it stand without a major legal fight.

If it stands, here’s a fearless prediction on the unintended consequences: a dramatic increase in the number and variety of common law nuisance torts.

  5. Andy D says:

If private citizens choose to move away from downtown, why would government be liable for it?
